Did you know 1 in 4 college women will be sexually assaulted before they graduate?

It is time to bring awareness and light to this issue. Your art can do this!

This spring quarter, the Right to Know peer educators are teaming up with Catalyst, a student art group on campus, to create an exhibit called “We Step Into the Light.” Right to Know is a peer education group working under the Campus Assault Resources and Education (CARE) office on campus. As peer educators, we provide support and resources to survivors of sexual violence and present workshops to create awareness and prevention of sexual assault. Our next project is called “We Step Into the Light” and this is where we need your help!

“We Step Into the Light” was created by Dr. Desmonette Hazly to bring awareness to the issues of sexual assault, relationship violence, stalking and gender based violence through art projects created for “thrivers” (replacing the term “survivors”). The goal of this project is to listen to a thriver’s story, learning about who they are as a whole person, and then capture what is heard in any art form, including painting, song, sculpture, music, jewelry, ceramics, etc. In this project, an artist will be paired with someone who has experienced sexual violence.  The artist will interview his/her partner, and then create an art project inspired by this person, with the goal of showing that person what unique value they have as a human being, and how visible they truly are.

During Spring Quarter, Right to Know will host a mixer to talk to artists interested in the project and provide a safe space for any questions or concerns. Artists will then be paired with a partner to set up interviews. The artist will then create an art project from what they saw in this person or something they heard, and the art projects will be revealed in an exhibit in the Student Center on April 25th, 2011.

All art supplies needed for the project will be covered and all art pieces will be on display from Monday April 25th through Wednesday April 27th. This is a unique and powerful opportunity to learn about yourself and be a part of showing someone else their own unique beauty, as experienced by you.  We in Right to Know are excited to make that difference together with you!

Catalyst is pleased to present Gallery TV, a sculpture and slideshow projection by Gabriel Arroyo Velasco that makes humorous comments on the value of art in Los Angeles.

“This project is meant to work on a few levels. It can be considered a desperate way to show work at some of Los Angeles’s leading galleries. By turn it can be seen as these same galleries throwing the work out the way televisions are put out in certain areas when they stop working. Hence the color bars, which are used to indicate non programming hours, the reverberations of which can be seen as humorous commentary on these possibilities. Velasco graduated from Cal State Long Beach in 2010 and is currently pursuing his MFA at UC Riverside.
